Joe Hill background

Joe Hill

The film is a biographical drama that tells the story of Joe Hill, a Swedish-American labor activist who was executed in 1915 for a murder he did not commit.

Joe Hill, a legendary figure from the early 1900s, immigrates to the US with his brother, but they soon lose touch. Joe finds work, but is disillusioned by the injustices and tragedies he witnesses. He becomes involved with the IWW, a union for workers without trades, despite the risks of public demonstration and speaking out. Joe uses his music, singing with the Salvation Army, to spread his message and rally support. As he gains more followers, he also attracts powerful enemies. Eventually, he is implicated in a murder and decides to defend himself in court, taking on the role of his own lawyer during the trial.
