George Harvey Bone, a composer in early 20th century London, struggles to write a piano concerto amidst stress and blackouts caused by dissonances. His life becomes complicated when he meets Netta, a singer who inspires a new motif for his concerto, but uses it as a song for her own gain. As George becomes more entangled with Netta, his relationships with his girlfriend Barbara and his work on the concerto begin to suffer.
