Waiter Peter Stanislavsky, a would-be novelist, marries Marcia and learns to play bridge to please her, despite feeling it's a childish game. He's unexpectedly asked to play with expert Cedric Van Dorn and trounces him, jokingly crediting the "Stanislavsky method". This sparks a national phenomenon, with a book and tour, but Peter's relationship with Marcia begins to deteriorate as he questions her playstyle and suspects an affair with Lola Starr.
