In an English village before Dunkirk, a grief-stricken Mr. Tom Oakley takes in a 10-year-old boy, William, evacuated from London. William is troubled, struggling with bedwetting, illiteracy, and a deep fear of hell, with scars on his back. Mr. Tom learns that William was abused at home and decides to provide a better life. However, when William's mother convinces him to return to London, Mr. Tom becomes worried and lonely after not hearing from the boy for two weeks.
