In 1950s Ireland, Desmond Doyle faces an uphill battle when his wife abandons him and their three young children. Despite his efforts to provide for them through singing and odd jobs, the government and child services intervene, citing a lack of precedent for a father raising children without a mother. Undeterred, Doyle finds a retired lawyer willing to take on his case and together they fight to overturn the decision, taking their case all the way to the Supreme Court.
