Mala, a skilled hunter, lives a contented life in his Canadian Arctic tribe. His wife Aba urges him to trade with white men for better goods, so they set out on a 500-mile trek. However, things take a dark turn when Aba is forcibly taken from their tent and raped by the captain. Mala returns to find Aba dead and is consumed by grief and rage. He kills the captain and sets out with his family, eventually taking on new wives. When the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrive, Mala is reluctant to help them, but eventually agrees to go with them to their base. However, he learns he may face execution and makes a daring escape, stealing a dog sled team and heading back to his land.
