A film about Barry Fitzgerald, a charismatic Irish-American who runs a shabby boarding house near NYC's Third Avenue. He's a passionate horse racing fan, but not exactly a winner. Barry's carefree nature and philosophical outlook on life often lead him to meddle in the affairs of those around him, including his daughter's romance with a returning WWII sailor. His real-life brother, Arthur Shields, plays his brother, a police diver who's not as wealthy as Barry makes him out to be.
