In June 1946, Stalin invites exiled Russians to return home, but the welcome is short-lived. Among the survivors are Dr. Aleksei Golovin, his French wife Marie, and their young son. Marie, accused of being a spy, is torn from her husband's side and sent to live in a communal house in Kyiv. She befriends the super, an old woman who speaks French, but is eventually denounced and killed by government agents.
