Edythe Ellis, a small-town girl, marries Charles Wharton, the mayor's son, just before he deploys to World War One. Charles is reluctant to reveal their marriage, fearing his parents' disapproval. After a car accident, Edythe gives birth to a daughter, Carol, who is sent to an orphanage. Carol is adopted by the Caldwells, who raise her as their own. As Carol turns 18, she meets her cousin Betty, a modern young woman who introduces her to her boyfriend Bruce.
