Nick Gentry, a lonely and troubled lieutenant, struggles to come to terms with the death of his colleague, which was partly his fault. When a reporter, Joan, tries to write a story about him, he's drawn to her, but ultimately rejects her advances. Instead, he finds himself falling for his new neighbor, Irene, who's trapped in a abusive marriage with Allan. When Allan threatens Irene with a gun, Nick shoots him, believing it to be self-defense. However, things take a complicated turn when it's revealed that Allan's gun was actually made inoperable.
