A kind-hearted bookseller's life is disrupted when he takes in a homeless man who's rescued from a watery grave, only to find the man's eccentricities gradually draining the joy from their lives.

A vagrant named Boudu jumps into the Seine River and is rescued by a kind and book-loving bookseller, Mr. Lestingois. Despite his good intentions, Boudu's presence disrupts the household harmony, as he is slovenly, idle, and has a lecherous nature.
