After leaving her career as a food writer, Jane Stern discovered a new passion as a paramedic and, in the process, overcame her struggles with clinical depression.

Married food writers Jane and Michael Stern navigate their 33-year relationship as Jane struggles with insecurities, depression, and phobias, while Michael remains sober after three years. Inspired by Michael, Jane decides to shake off her fears and enrolls in the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department's EMT training program. Despite initial doubts, Jane completes the course and earns her certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. As she begins working at the fire department, her new career takes a toll on her personal life and relationship with Michael.
