Tony Miller, a cunning bookie, finds himself enamored with Helen Mason, the manager of an art shop. She introduces him to a world of culture, and he becomes fascinated, even dabbling in petty theft. He applies his racetrack manipulations to the art world and discovers that it too has its share of con artists, including a painter named Gigi who creates fake masterpieces and sells them as originals.
