Max finds himself trapped in a rut, feeling stuck for nearly 30 years as he yearns for something more than the same old Toronto gay dance clubs. He's looking for purpose and meaning in his life. His childhood friend Mary is pregnant and desperately wants to escape her religious mother Dorothy and their small town upbringing. One day, she shows up on Max's doorstep after years apart, convincing him to pretend to be her baby daddy since no one else did before. They create a half-baked plan that splits Max’s fragile queer ego, turning him into The Divine—his drag queen alter ego who constantly fights against becoming hetero-normative. As they navigate this charade, Max falls deeply in love with their Lamaze instructor Patrick, but it throws a wrench in the plans for Dorothy. Internally overwhelmed by life's chaos, Max develops Couvade Syndrome—an unusual condition that causes him to display pregnancy symptoms like his pregnant friend Mary.
