The series showcases the social and family dynamics within a typical African-American intercity family living in Montgomery, Alabama during the late 1960s. The show follows the life of Dean Williams, son of Bill and Lillian Williams. His mother works as an accountant for the Department of the Treasury, while his father is a music professor and part-time musician. Dean also has older siblings, Bruce and Kim. Many of his friends and neighbors are prominent in his flashbacks, including his best friend Brad and his longtime crush Kiesa. The story unfolds through Dean's reflections as an adult in his mid-30s.
