On the Discworld, a world balanced on the backs of four elephants and a giant turtle, Susan Sto Helit faces a crisis. Her grandfather, Death, is struggling to cope with the loss of his adopted daughter and son-in-law, who were also her parents. As Death's grief is immense, he has forgotten that he has already "processed" them, which is causing him great distress. Susan, who is now forced to take over Death's duties, finds herself falling for Imp, an elf/human who is being taken over by a musical force that's driving him and his friends to play rock music. As the music gains popularity, it has sinister plans to conquer the entire Discworld, and it's up to Susan, the wizard's head, the Archchancellor, and Death to stop it.
