In 1976: Ruth Gilmartin (Michelle Dockery) visits her mother Sally (Charlotte Rampling) in rural Cambridgeshire, where she learns that Sally was born Eva Delectorskaya as a Russian refugee recruited by the British in 1939. After narrowly escaping death in the Netherlands, Eva (Hayley Atwell) is sent to America to seduce President Mason Harding (Bertie Carvel), an adviser to the president, to find out if the Americans intend joining the war. She successfully accomplishes her mission but later discovers errors in a map she supplies to American agents outlining a German invasion of the United States. This leads to Eva being betrayed and attempting to kill her; she survives and is convinced that someone has betrayed her. Despite believing her life was in danger for many years, Ruth buys a shotgun as protection. Sally then uses this opportunity to contact Lucas Romer (Rufus Sewell), asking him to pose as a journalist investigating wartime espionage, leading to the discovery of the traitor after more than thirty years.
