Cold Comfort Farm background

Cold Comfort Farm

A young Flora Poste, around the age of 20, leaves behind her grieving parents in early 1930s London. With little financial resources ("barely enough to keep her in stockings and furs"),she finds herself alone and struggling to navigate the city.

A young woman, Flora Poste, leaves behind her parents' funeral and finds herself alone with limited means ("barely enough to keep her in stockings and furs") in mid-1930's London. The protagonist is a 20-something aspiring author who lacks the ambition or financial resources to pursue their career until they are 50 years old. However, she is supported by friends and distant relatives who provide valuable life experiences for her writing. She makes an informed decision when she chooses to stay with the Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm, where she expects to find both "amusing but interesting" times. The farm's colorful cast of cousins do not disappoint her, proving that she has a talent for fixing things and people. Despite the challenges, Flora successfully removes the curse from the farm, frees its inhabitants from Ada Doom's oppressive grip, finds love and happiness, and even helps Ada overcome her self-imposed solitude after witnessing something unpleasant in the woodshed as a young girl.
