A modern day noir story follows Psychiatrist Eldon Chance, a middle-aged man struggling with his career, marriage, and relationship with his teenage daughter. His natural talent for psychoanalysis allows him to assess clients, but he's unable to cure them. His life changes when he meets Jaclyn Blackstone, a mysterious and attractive woman with dark secrets and private problems. When her abusive ex-husband, a corrupt cop, becomes a threat, Chance becomes obsessed with helping her, but soon realizes he's in over his head. Help arrives in the form of D, a hulking, intelligent, and skilled individual who agrees to assist Chance in dealing with the dangerous situation.
