In 1934, America, a fugitive named Ben Hawkins finds refuge with a traveling carnival, including a tarot card reader, a blind mentalist, a bearded lady, and conjoined twins. The carnival is owned by Management, who has designs on Ben's untapped gift: healing the lame and raising the dead. Ben's cryptic dreams disturb him, and he shares them with a Methodist preacher, Brother Justin Crowe, who believes he is following God's will.
