Two friends, Michael and Brian, take a weekend fishing trip to escape their personal struggles. Michael, straightforward and harboring anger issues, is struggling with his live-in girlfriend's lack of commitment. Brian, a spiritualist, was fired from his mechanic job due to over-analyzing customers. They stumble upon a mysterious grave marker with a key bearing the stamp "PUM ZACH". Despite initial reluctance, they decide to uncover the key's owner and the person buried. Their journey takes them from San Francisco to the Nevada desert, where they meet a cast of characters, including a kleptomaniac, a guide, a fundamentalist Christian, and a dog on wheels. Ultimately, they discover more about themselves than the truth behind the grave.
