In 1989, the Americans and Russians have lunar bases with two-person teams. The Americans replace their all-male teams frequently due to mental instability, while the Russians' mixed-gender team remains well-adjusted. A married American male-female team is sent to replace the all-male team, and their relationship is central to the story, along with their interactions with their Russian neighbors.
