In the midst of 1913, Axel Heyst resides on a secluded island near Surabaya, a Dutch East Indies port. While conducting personal business, he visits a hotel owned by the racist German, Schomberg. The hotel features an all-female orchestra, which performs nightly. The orchestra's owner, San Giacomo, agrees to "sell" one of the girls, Alma, to Schomberg. Alma asks Heyst to rescue her from her captors, and they escape to his island, where they live with his native servant, Wang. However, Schomberg betrays them, leading sinister Mr. Jones and his accomplices to the island, claiming a fortune awaits them there.
