In the Diamantina Mountains of Brazil, 1821, a slave trader named Antonio returns to his inherited farmhouse to find his wife has passed away in childbirth. He is left to care for his demented mother-in-law and numerous slaves, and he marries his 12-year-old niece Beatriz. Despite his new marriage, Antonio's restless nature drives him to continue his trading expeditions, leaving Beatriz behind. The isolation of the farmhouse mirrors the loneliness of its inhabitants, all of whom have been displaced from their original homes and forced to coexist.
