In 1936, General Metaxas imposes martial law in Greece, prompting a union leader named Boutros to go into hiding. As a ruthless police leader, Primoukis, searches for him, Boutros takes refuge with Margot Santorini, a wealthy and bored Austrian-born socialite married to Rico, a penniless Italian diplomat. Margot's life is transformed by her involvement in Boutros's escape, and she soon finds herself in love. The story skips forward to 1945, where Rico and Raoul, who helped Margot escape out of love, meet in France to discuss her fate. The narrative jumps again to 1975, when Margot's daughter visits Greece to uncover the truth about her father.
