A widow and grocery-store owner, Cesira, flees war-torn Rome with her 13-year-old daughter, Rosetta, seeking safety in the village of her birth. Despite initial peace, food scarcity and the threat of war loom large. Meanwhile, Cesira's growing feelings for a young intellectual, Michele, are overshadowed by her focus on her daughter's well-being and their struggle to survive. As the Allies close in, Cesira returns to Rome, where she faces the devastating reality of war firsthand.
