In the 1930s, Sven's life takes a dramatic turn after his mother's passing. He finds work as a farm-hand at the affluent Höglund's farm, where he faces exploitation and harsh conditions, including sleeping alongside the cows. It is there that he meets Anna, a kindred spirit with a disability, who is one of the few people to treat him with respect. As Sven's mistreatment at the hands of Höglund becomes unbearable, he makes the bold decision to leave and start anew with Anna's family.
