In Puritan Boston, Hester Prynne, a seamstress, is punished for breaking the Sabbath, but kind Minister Arthur Dimmesdale takes pity on her. Despite being married to Roger Prynne, a physician who has been missing for seven years, Hester falls in love with Dimmesdale. However, their relationship is doomed, and Dimmesdale is forced to leave for England. Upon his return, he finds Hester pregnant and the focus of the town's shame.
