A romantic drama unfolds in the midst of war as a widowed Catholic woman finds herself falling for a tough and seasoned lieutenant colonel stationed in the Pacific during World War II.

War widow Lee Ashley joins the American Red Cross in 1943 to find her husband's grave on Guadalcanal, where he was a US Marines lieutenant killed in battle. She meets nurse Kate Connors in Noumea, New Caledonia, and falls in love with Lt. Col. Colin Black, who seduces her by pretending to have known her husband. The affair leads to heartbreak and tragedy.
