A ruthless businessman's plan to escape financial ruin is foiled when his accountant discovers his deceit, forcing a dramatic role reversal.

Kees Popinga, a meek head clerk, discovers his boss De Koster has embezzled his Dutch company's funds to pursue a romance with a Parisian woman, Michelle. Following a confrontation, De Koster is killed and Popinga flees to Paris with the remaining cash, pursued by the authorities as he tries to contact Michelle.
