Dr. Herbert Bock, a chief of medicine in a New York City hospital, is struggling with personal and professional crises. He's grappling with impotence, his wife has left him, and his children won't speak to him. Meanwhile, a series of mysterious deaths plagues the hospital. Amidst this turmoil, Bock finds himself drawn to the younger Barbara Drummond, whose father is a patient.
