Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, a film production company travels from Spain to Berlin to collaborate with UFA on a joint project. As tensions simmer on set, cultural and political differences exacerbate the situation. The crew uses Jewish and Gypsy prisoners as extras to achieve an Andalusian look, while the director's personal life is complicated by his affair with a young actress who is secretly working to secure her father's release from a Franco-controlled jail. When Joseph Goebbels offers the actress favors, the director and crew encourage her to reciprocate for the sake of the production, leaving her with few options and little hope for genuine kindness.
