A World War I regiment of mostly New York-Irish soldiers, the Fighting 69th, is led by a cocky and selfish soldier named Jerry Plunkett. Despite efforts from officers, non-coms, and even the chaplain to instill discipline, Plunkett prioritizes his own interests and acts cowardly, resulting in the loss of many comrades.
