Upstanding citizen Ed Smart's life is turned upside down when his youngest daughter Mary Katherine is the sole witness to the kidnapping of her sister Elizabeth from their home. As the investigation unfolds, Ed and his eldest son Charles become prime suspects, but it soon becomes clear that they are innocent. The real culprit, a homeless handyman turned self-proclaimed prophet, is eventually captured after a months-long search.

The film is inspired by the real-life kidnapping of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted in Salt Lake City, Utah in June 2002 by two individuals.
