In late 19th century Norway, a 10-year-old boy named Yohan takes matters into his own hands to support his struggling family after his father leaves for America. However, his plans are derailed when his jealous older brother signs him up to become a farm laborer, forcing Yohan to embark on a treacherous journey filled with danger, loneliness, and feelings of abandonment. Along the way, he meets other child wanderers, including an 8-year-old girl and her younger brother, and together they face numerous challenges as they try to survive. Eventually, Yohan arrives at the farm where he is expected to work, but his decisions are often misunderstood and he is punished by the harsh farm owner, Nome.
