California Morning Whipple, a teenager, is forced to leave her beloved New England home after her mother decides to move the family to California during the Gold Rush. Initially, California is furious and renames herself Lucy, resistant to the idea of making California her new home. However, as time passes, Lucy begins to develop a sense of belonging in her new surroundings.
