Young-adult siblings Johnny and Victoria Barton, British nationals, arrive in Paris in May 1889 for the World's Exposition. While Victoria is excited, Johnny is preoccupied with logistics. Their 48-hour stay takes a drastic turn when Victoria can't find Johnny and discovers his room, 19, has vanished from the hotel register. With no proof of Johnny's existence, Victoria must find someone to corroborate her story, leading her to George Hathaway, a fellow British artist, and together they try to uncover what happened to Johnny and why the hotel staff is lying.
