Two Jesuit priests embark on a perilous journey to 17th century Japan, seeking their mentor who is believed to have renounced his faith, and endeavoring to spread Catholicism in a hostile environment.

Two Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe, travel to Japan in 1633 to investigate the disappearance of their mentor, Father Cristovão Ferreira. They arrive in a land where anti-Christian purges are rampant and the Japanese Christians are being brutally tortured.
