In 1976, the Red Crow Mi'kmaq reservation is under government control, forcing every child under 16 to attend residential school. Aila, a 15-year-old "weed princess," avoids the harsh St. Dymphna's school by paying the "truancy tax" to the sadistic Indian agent, Popper. When her drug money is stolen and her father Joseph returns from prison, Aila's world is turned upside down. She must choose between running or fighting, as the Mi'kmaq people never run.
