Four expatriate Americans, a writer, entrepreneur, theater director, and physical artist, move to Prague after the fall of communism, seeking an artistic renaissance. Initially, they're enchanted by the city's beauty, cheap beer, and liberal lifestyle. However, their dreams are soon foiled, and Prague becomes a dark cauldron of failure. Despite this, they struggle to leave due to an inexplicable attachment to the city.

Prague emerged as a new haven for American artists in the 1990s, earning the nickname "Left Bank of the 90s," much like Paris had been a hub for literary expatriates in the past.
