A struggling filmmaker, Fields, faces a series of misadventures as he tries to sell a film story, including run-ins with bullying children, a physical confrontation with a woman, and abuse from a waitress. After becoming the guardian of his niece, he takes her to Mexico to sell wooden nutmegs in a Russian colony, only to find himself in a competition with Leon Errol, the owner of a shooting gallery and father of the bullying children.
