After World War II, Susanne Wallner returns to her Berlin apartment, only to find Dr. Hans Mertens already living there. A war veteran struggling with depression and heavy drinking, Hans is initially unwilling to leave. As they share the apartment, they develop a sympathetic connection, eventually falling in love. However, their budding relationship is threatened when Hans learns that Ferdinand Brückner, his former captain who gave the order to kill over 100 innocent people, including children and women, on Christmas 1942 in Poland, is still alive and residing in Berlin.
