Martha Hicks, a cunning con artist, escapes prison and seeks relief from her rheumatism at her estranged husband's Wisconsin spa hotel, where she assumes a new identity.

A con artist, known as Countess von Claudwig, is released from prison and heads to a Wisconsin spa to treat her rheumatism at her estranged husband's hotel. While there, she secretly visits her two abandoned daughters, who are now grown. The older daughter wants to marry a good man, but her father wants her to marry for wealth. The younger daughter has gotten involved with a hoodlum. Despite denying any family ties, the Countess uses her cunning to try to get her family back on track and evade the detective who's after her.
