Ludwig, King of Bavaria, is portrayed as a romantic hero in this film, which follows his life from his coronation in 1864 until his death in 1886. Despite being a fan of Richard Wagner, Ludwig is betrayed by him, and his unrequited love for his cousin Elisabeth of Austria leads to heartbreak. Struggling with his own sexuality and feelings of isolation, Ludwig's mental state begins to deteriorate, ultimately leading to his descent into madness.
