A young woman, Adele, stands on a Paris bridge, overcome with sorrow and a deep longing to escape her troubles. She's drawn to Gabor, a knife thrower who needs a human target for his act. As they travel along the Mediterranean, they win a large sum of money through gambling and maintain a platonic relationship. Despite this, Adele pursues other men, eventually falling in love with a newlywed groom and eloping to Greece. However, she's soon abandoned by the groom. Realizing that her luck has been poor, Adele and Gabor must come together to turn their fortunes around, but they're struggling to survive and reunite.
