In 1925, Nacib, a bar owner in a small Brazilian coastal town, hires Gabriela as a cook, and they begin a passionate affair. However, Nacib becomes jealous of the attention Gabriela receives and proposes to her, hoping to stop it. After their marriage, he tries to change her behavior to fit his expectations, but she strays and they eventually annul their marriage. Later, as the town modernizes, Nacib and Gabriela resume their relationship, with Gabriela returning as his mistress.
