A carnival dancer named Lane Bellamy becomes stranded in a small southern town controlled by a corrupt politician, Titus Semple. She falls for the town's sheriff, Fielding Carlisle, who is struggling to stand up to Titus. However, Titus sees Lane as a threat to his own power and begins to undermine her. Lane faces numerous challenges, including unemployment, arrest, and eventually, marriage to Dan Reynolds, a member of the town's political machine. The couple's life takes a dramatic turn when Lane's former lover, Carlisle, shows up drunk and shoots himself at their home.
