A young girl named Alysia is forced to adapt to a new life in 1970s San Francisco after her mother's sudden death. Her father, Steve, tries to restart his life by pursuing his passion for writing and openly dating men. This bohemian lifestyle creates tension between Steve's expectations as a parent and the outside world's expectations, as well as Alysia's own desires for less independence. As Alysia grows into adulthood, the bond between her and her father is tested in unexpected and painful ways.
