A former schoolmaster, Benjamin Twist, is mistakenly appointed as a tough prison governor and takes charge of a notorious penitentiary. Initially, he thinks he's been sent to a school and celebrates, only to end up on the wrong side of the prison bars after a night of heavy drinking. Eventually, his true identity is restored, and he wins over the prisoners by turning a blind eye to their illicit activities.
