Mitch Bright, a successful attorney, returns to his hometown of Trapper Falls, Alaska, after 20 years and clashes with his high school rival, Dan Reed, who is the mayor and building a nativity scene on city property. Mitch files an injunction, citing separation of church and state, and decides to run for mayor against Dan. As the campaign heats up, Mitch accuses Dan of forcing Christianity on the town and begins promoting "Happy Holidays" over "Merry Christmas." Meanwhile, Dan and his wife Kristen's children are involved in a skiing competition and a church pageant, and the family's faith is tested as they navigate the controversy.
